Preparing for the sacred work of the Temple required a dedicated effort. Ezra puts together a highly respected team of leaders and wise men to recruit servants for this holy service. The primary approach among commentators is that Ezra directly appointed men like Eliezer and his companions to serve as his personal messengers. However, an alternative perspective suggests that Ezra sent out a different group of envoys to first summon Eliezer and his colleagues to him [רלב״ג].
Regardless of how they were gathered, there is complete agreement about the impressive caliber of the men chosen for this mission. They are recognized by titles that reflect their high standing within the community. Some are noted as prominent leaders and important heads of the people, while others are recognized for their deep wisdom and understanding.
Selecting such important and wise individuals served a very specific purpose. Ezra instructed them to travel to a place called Casiphia and approach its leader, Iddo, in a pleasant and peaceful manner. Their goal was to request that Iddo send Levites back with them to serve in the Temple [רס״ג]. Dispatching such an honorable group was a deliberate show of respect toward Iddo. By sending men of such high status, Ezra understood that the delegation would be much more likely to secure their request with ease [רלב״ג].
