Among those they gathered was a highly capable individual, noted for his deep wisdom and understanding [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His particular expertise lay in his mastery of the laws of song [מצודת דוד].

The exact identity of this wise man is a matter of discussion. One perspective suggests that he remains unnamed in the record, identified only as a member of the Mahli family. According to this view, the messengers also brought back another distinct individual named Sherebiah, along with his sons and brothers [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that the wise man and Sherebiah are the same person. In this reading, rather than indicating an additional individual, the record simply states that the messengers brought back a wise man, namely Sherebiah, who together with his sons and brothers amounted to eighteen men [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

The detailed lineage tracing these individuals back to Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, serves to emphasize that all these men were Levites [רש״י]. It confirms they were members of the Merari family and direct descendants of Jacob [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
