Genesis 5:3Sefaria

Beyond the tragedy of Abel's murder and Cain's exile, the story of early humanity pivots toward renewal. The first family begins to rebuild, establishing a new, pure lineage that will serve as the foundation for the rest of human history. The exact documentation of lifespans throughout this era is not merely historical. It establishes the fundamental belief that the world was created at a specific moment in time and has not existed eternally [חומש קה״ת]. Yet, the massive gap of one hundred and thirty years between the dawn of creation and the birth of a new son is deeply significant. Following the initial sin and the trauma of a murdered child, Adam sat in mourning. Accepting a state of excommunication, he separated from his wife for over a century

During this prolonged period of isolation, Adam did not father complete human offspring. Instead, this era was marked by the creation of spirits, demons, and lilin. Some explain that these were strange, deformed creatures resulting from God's curse following the original sin Others suggest they were beings possessing human bodies but lacking complete intellect, akin to apes Only after one hundred and thirty years, a number that also aligns with an ancient chronological system based on units of sixty [קאסוטו], was the curse lifted. Having achieved complete repentance, Adam returned to his wife to father a perfect human child.

The extraordinary lifespans of these early generations were the result of several distinct factors. Their longevity stemmed from a simple, vegetarian diet devoid of wine, coupled with an avoidance of excessive physical desires, which preserved their bodily strength. Furthermore, they benefited from a special divine providence intended to rapidly populate the earth and provide early humanity with the necessary time to develop natural sciences and astronomy [אברבנאל].

While it is naturally expected for any living creature to produce offspring of its own kind, the transmission of a father's likeness and image to his son denotes a profound spiritual and intellectual inheritance rather than a merely physical one. While Cain and Abel were born with a strong inclination toward evil, Seth was born pure, entering a world from which the initial spiritual contamination had receded [אור החיים]. Now, after repenting and completing his intellect, Adam successfully passed down his supreme virtues, wisdom, and moral perfection, the very image of God, to his son Just as Adam was created circumcised, Seth was born in the same perfected state [תורה תמימה]. However, while this spiritual resemblance was transmitted entirely, the absolute physical perfection of humanity had already begun to slowly deteriorate in these early generations [רש״ר הירש].

The emphasis on this spiritual transmission is exclusively reserved for Seth, entirely bypassing his older brothers. The primary approach among commentators is that Cain and Abel are not considered the true builders of the world. Abel was murdered without leaving heirs, and the descendants of Cain were eventually wiped out in the Flood. In contrast, the name Seth is rooted in the concept of a foundation The world was ultimately established upon him, making him the exclusive ancestor of all humanity that survived the Flood

The continuous historical record of these generations divides each leader's life into two distinct phases, the years before the birth of their children and the years after. This structure conveys that life without descendants is inherently lacking. A person achieves complete vitality only after bringing children into the world [כלי יקר]. Finally, the explicit mention of death at the conclusion of each life serves a specific purpose. It clarifies that these righteous individuals lived full lives and died naturally in their beds at a ripe old age, rather than perishing as a punishment alongside the wicked during the great Flood
