פרשת בראשית

Genesis 5:6Sefaria

וַֽיְחִי־שֵׁ֕ת חָמֵ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים וּמְאַ֣ת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־אֱנֽוֹשׁ׃

The transition of early human generations takes on a highly structured form, laying the foundation for the lineage that will ultimately build the world. The narrative style shifts from the lofty poetry of creation to a simpler, yet still noble, language, even as it becomes filled with numerical records [קאסוטו]. Seth's age at this milestone, one hundred and five years, is calculated as one thousand two hundred months plus an additional sixty months [קאסוטו].

A deliberate brevity surrounds the birth of his son. In other accounts, the birth of a child is often accompanied by a detailed description of the naming process, but here, the record is remarkably short. The act of giving a name carries deep spiritual significance, representing existence, stability, and lasting permanence. Because the early generations were ultimately wiped out without leaving a lasting root, the act of naming is not highlighted. Seth himself was an exception; since the future of the world was built upon him, the meaning of his name was previously explored in depth. Yet, because the descendants of Seth listed in this lineage are destined to be washed away in the Flood, their births are recorded swiftly without dwelling on their names. It is only when the lineage reaches Noah—the man through whom the world was saved and granted an enduring existence—that the deep significance of naming is brought back to the forefront [פרדס יוסף].
