זְרַעְתֶּ֨ם הַרְבֵּ֜ה וְהָבֵ֣א מְעָ֗ט אָכ֤וֹל וְאֵין־לְשׇׂבְעָה֙ שָׁת֣וֹ וְאֵין־לְשׇׁכְרָ֔ה לָב֖וֹשׁ וְאֵין־לְחֹ֣ם ל֑וֹ וְהַ֨מִּשְׂתַּכֵּ֔ר מִשְׂתַּכֵּ֖ר אֶל־צְר֥וֹר נָקֽוּב׃ {פ}

Life has become a cycle of deep existential distress, where the natural order is completely overturned. Despite immense human effort across all areas of daily living, the results are meager, stripped of blessing, and shadowed by a continuous curse.

The struggle begins in the fields. Normally, a farmer plants a small amount of seed and anticipates a bountiful harvest. However, this reality is reversed. The crops brought home amount to even less than the seeds originally scattered in the dirt [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. This affliction continues even after food reaches the table. A person might eat a proper, hearty meal, yet remain entirely unsatisfied, as a curse rests either within the food itself or within the person's own body [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Similarly, drinking brings no relief. This lack of satisfaction does not refer to an inability to lose one's senses to intoxication, but rather a failure to simply quench one's thirst [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. Another perspective suggests that the wine has simply lost its flavor altogether [מצודת דוד].

The deprivation extends to basic bodily protection and personal finances. Garments that should naturally provide warmth offer no comfort against the cold [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. All economic gain meets a similar fate, captured by a vivid image of a laborer or merchant who earns wages only to place them into a torn purse. The wealth vanishes instantly, falling through the holes the very moment it is earned [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

There is a deeper spiritual logic behind this sequence of hardships. Each curse acts as a direct, measure-for-measure response to the neglect of the Temple service [רש״י]. The meager grain harvest is a consequence of failing to bring the first fruits. The lingering hunger after eating stems from the neglect of the meal offerings. The inability to find satisfaction in drinking is a punishment for halting the wine libations. Finally, the lack of warmth from clothing directly mirrors the failure to maintain the holy garments of the priests.
