חגי, פרק א׳, פסוק ז׳

Haggai 1:7Sefaria

כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶ֖ם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶֽם׃

A divine call for deep self-reflection marks a crucial turning point for the people, shifting their focus toward the rebuilding of the Temple. God requires them to pay close attention to the path they are walking. This specific demand for reflection is presented twice in the prophecy. Initially, it served to make the people aware of the hardships and failures plaguing their daily efforts. Now, however, the renewed focus serves as a direct, practical call to change their behavior [אברבנאל].

The demand to focus their hearts requires profound attention. The primary approach among commentators is that this reflection is meant to make the people examine their daily habits and business dealings so they can actively correct them [מצודת דוד]. This correction is deeply spiritual, asking the people to repent and repair their inner selves and the state of their souls [מלבי״ם].

Yet, this process is not meant to remain purely a mental exercise. Inner reflection is a necessary preparation for real action. Spiritual growth is a strict requirement for earning God's care, prophecy, and the complete redemption that comes with building the Temple [מלבי״ם]. Therefore, the people must do everything in their power to rebuild God's house [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Once they have prepared themselves internally and corrected their behavior, they must immediately step forward and carry out the practical work of going up the mountain and constructing the Temple [אבן עזרא].
