חגי, פרק א׳, פסוק ח׳

Haggai 1:8Sefaria

The call to rebuild the Temple comes with an urgent push for immediate, practical action. The focus is not on grand architecture, but on sincere effort and the willingness to construct a dwelling place for God out of whatever materials are available.

The prophet delivers a direct instruction to go up into the mountains surrounding Jerusalem, gather wood, and begin building [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The specific request for wood serves to encourage the people. They might lack the resources to build a magnificent structure out of stone, but God asks them to construct it at least from wood, assuring them that a simpler building is perfectly acceptable [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, the physical construction alone is insufficient. The people must first undergo a spiritual preparation by correcting their actions, and only after they mend their ways will the physical building hold true value [מלבי״ם].

God promises that He will be entirely pleased with their work. Even if the resulting structure is small and modest in its dimensions, He will accept it completely [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, God declares that He will be honored by this House [מצודת דוד], viewing it as a distinct honor to dwell in this specific, humble structure [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Once the people have corrected their path and the House becomes acceptable to God, His glory will become openly visible within its walls. He will rest His divine presence there, accompanied by miracles [מלבי״ם].
