II Kings 20:11Sefaria

וַיִּקְרָ֛א יְשַׁעְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא אֶל־יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיָּ֣שֶׁב אֶת־הַצֵּ֗ל בַּֽ֠מַּעֲל֠וֹת אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרְדָ֜ה בְּמַעֲל֥וֹת אָחָ֛ז אֲחֹרַנִּ֖ית עֶ֥שֶׂר מַעֲלֽוֹת׃ {פ}

A moment of divine intervention unfolds as the natural flow of time appears to reverse, serving as a deeply personal sign of a king's recovery. Following the prophet's prayer, a miraculous phenomenon occurs on a specific measuring device located in Jerusalem. This device was a structure of stairs built by King Ahaz in the royal palace [רלב״ג, רד״ק]. Functioning as a sundial, the stairs featured a marked stone used to track the hours of the day based on the descending shadow of the sun [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ahaz was, in fact, the first to introduce such an invention to Jerusalem [אברבנאל].

When the miracle took place, the reversal of time was not sudden. Instead, the shadow retreated gradually, step by step, moving backward in the exact same orderly manner it had originally descended [אברבנאל].

The primary approach among commentators focuses on the local nature of this event. The miracle did not occur in the heavens, meaning the sun itself never altered its natural orbit. Rather, the wonder was unique to Jerusalem, affecting only the specific sunbeams striking Ahaz's sundial. Because of this, it is understood that God returned the shadow, rather than moving the sun itself. This localized event explains why a Babylonian delegation later traveled specifically to investigate the wonder that occurred in the land, as the phenomenon was visible only in the Land of Israel and not throughout the rest of the world [אברבנאל, החולק על רלב״ג]. Offering a physical explanation for this local event, one perspective suggests that God miraculously generated winds and vapors to quickly deflect the sun's rays onto the stairs [רלב״ג מובא באברבנאל].

Beyond the physical mechanics, the tradition reveals a profound historical closure regarding the shadow that went down on these specific stairs. On the day that King Ahaz, Hezekiah's wicked father, died, the day was miraculously shortened. The shadow rushed downward ten degrees ahead of time in order to minimize his honor and prevent people from having enough time to properly eulogize him. Now, those exact ten hours that were taken away from Ahaz on the day of his death were returned to his son Hezekiah, transforming a mark of disgrace into a divine sign of life and healing [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק].
