II Kings 20:8Sefaria

A dying king suddenly receives a prophetic message that he will recover, but his immediate reaction raises questions about his level of trust in the divine promise. At first glance, his response appears to be a disrespectful demand or a sign of weak faith [מדוד ועד לחורבן, רלב״ג]. However, commentators offer different understandings of his true motives.

The primary approach understands the king's words as a direct request for a physical sign and proof of his healing [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He found it difficult to accept the good news because he had just received a harsh, absolute decree of death. When the prophet suddenly returned with a promise of recovery, the king suspected the prophet was only trying to comfort him after seeing his bitter tears. Even as his physical sores began to heal, a lingering fear remained that the illness was not entirely cured and could easily return. Therefore, he demanded concrete proof that he would fully recover and regain enough strength to go up to the House of God [רד״ק].

Alternatively, the request for a sign did not stem from a lack of faith in God, but rather from a deep theological concern. The king worried that the promise of fifteen additional years of life was conditional, depending entirely on his ability to maintain spiritual perfection. He asked for a sign to confirm that this extension of life was an absolute, unconditional gift [רלב״ג].

A distinctly different perspective views the king's reaction not as a question or a demand for proof, but as an emotional exclamation of pure wonder. Rather than asking for a sign, he was expressing his awe at the magnitude of the miracle. He cried out in excitement over how great and extraordinary it would be that God would heal his pain, allowing him to ascend to the House of God within three days [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, חומת אנך]. Deeply moved by the king's profound amazement, God then chose, on His own initiative, to provide a tangible physical sign involving the sun's shadow [חומת אנך].
