II Kings 24:19Sefaria

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֖ה יְהוֹיָקִֽים׃

A king's legacy is often measured not just by his personal morality, but by his political and spiritual leadership, particularly in how he navigates foreign empires and responds to God's prophets. Although King Zedekiah is recorded as having done evil, rabbinic tradition reveals a different reality, noting that he was actually a righteous individual. The heavy guilt of the era belonged instead to the people of his generation, who engaged in widespread sin and adopted the corrupt practices of neighboring nations.

The wrongdoing attributed directly to Zedekiah stems from two specific failures in his leadership. First, he refused to listen to the prophet Jeremiah and surrender to the Babylonian empire. Second, he actively rebelled against the king of Babylon. This political rebellion carried a severe spiritual consequence, as it required breaking an oath he had sworn to uphold in the name of God.

This context clarifies why Zedekiah's actions are directly compared to those of his predecessor, Jehoiakim. The parallel demonstrates that Jehoiakim shared these exact same fatal flaws, as his rule was similarly defined by a rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar and a strict refusal to heed the warnings of the prophet [מלבי״ם].
