The prophet guides the widow in preparing her physical and spiritual space for a miracle, establishing precise conditions to ensure the continuous flow of divine abundance. Her first instruction is to shut the door behind her [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this isolation maintains privacy. The dignity of a miracle demands secrecy; it cannot occur while exposed to the public eye. Another perspective suggests that closing the door protects the home from the evil eye. It also keeps away unworthy individuals, whose presence or negative actions could interrupt the divine flow [מלבי״ם].

During the actual pouring, the woman had to follow three strict conditions [מלבי״ם]. First, the pouring had to be a continuous, unbroken action, keeping the original jug upside down until the miracle concluded. Second, the blessing applied exclusively to the specific vessels that had been prepared and borrowed in advance. Third, she was forbidden from moving from her spot.

As each vessel filled, it had to be moved aside to make room for an empty one [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. This reveals a fundamental principle: only the receiving vessels move, while the woman and the original jug must remain completely still. The original jug transforms into a flowing spring, and a spring never shifts from its source. Furthermore, a miracle can only sustain itself in the exact location where it began [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Therefore, her sons brought the empty vessels and carried away the full ones while she stood firmly in place.

A unique perspective explains that the careful choreography of pouring and then moving the vessels was designed to prevent even a single drop of the blessed oil from falling to the ground during the exchange. Wasting divine abundance is akin to throwing away breadcrumbs; it shows disrespect for the provisions granted by God and ultimately leads to poverty. To prevent this, the woman had to arrange the vessels extremely close together, or even nested inside one another, ensuring that every drop was preserved and nothing was lost when a full container was moved away [אהבת יהונתן].
