II Kings 4:10Sefaria

A host's profound respect for a holy guest can transform a simple home into a spiritual sanctuary. Recognizing the deep holiness of the prophet Elisha, the Shunammite woman takes the initiative to build a private, dignified space for him. Her request to her husband blends practical hospitality with deep spiritual reverence, aiming to turn the prophet's occasional visits into a comfortable, regular stay.

The structure she proposes is understood primarily as a second story or a completely separate, private room. Architecturally, it is a permanent, high-quality addition made of solid stone or brick, rather than a temporary wooden partition [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Some suggest it is an extension built directly out from the wall, resembling a dome [רלב״ג], or a structure with a sloped roof like a tent to shield him from the sun and rain [אלשיך]. Beyond its physical design, the location of this upper room ensures a proper boundary between the prophet and the rest of the household, avoiding any inappropriate seclusion [אהבת יהונתן].

Once the room is built, the woman plans to furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. On a practical level, this provides everything an honored guest might need. However, supplying him with his own dedicated furniture serves a deeper purpose in preserving his dignity. To ensure that a great scholar is not diminished in the eyes of the public, it is fitting that he does not use everyday household items or eat at the family table, but rather enjoys his own respectable set of furnishings [רלב״ג, אהבת יהונתן, אלשיך].

On a spiritual level, these furnishings symbolize the transformation of the room into a resting place for the Divine Presence. The four specific items parallel four spiritual rectifications. The woman understands that the spirit of God rests upon the prophet, and she wishes to prepare a worthy space for Him in her home [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך, אלשיך]. The priority given to the bed and the table is not accidental. The primary upgrade to his visits is the new ability to sleep there [אלשיך]. Furthermore, Elisha's unique holiness is particularly evident in these two items; the Sages note that no fly was ever seen on his table, and his bedsheets carried the scent of the Garden of Eden [חומת אנך].

Ultimately, the entire building project is designed to give the prophet a place to retreat. The dedicated room allows him to sit in complete privacy and peace [מצודת דוד], shifting his relationship with the household from someone who merely passes through to an honored, long-term guest [אלשיך].
