מלכים ב, פרק ד׳, פסוק י״א

II Kings 4:11Sefaria

During one of his journeys to Shunem, Elisha the prophet accepts the hospitality prepared for him and steps into the room built specifically for his use. The exact timing of this visit is understood in a few ways. It can be viewed simply as an ordinary day during his travels [רש״י]. However, it may also mark the specific day he arrived in the city right after the construction of the new upper room was finished [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective suggests it was a special, pre-arranged date entirely dedicated to his visit [מלבי״ם].

Elisha enters the upper room, the very space the Shunammite woman had thoughtfully arranged. By choosing to rest there, he effectively establishes the room as his permanent home whenever he is in the region [מלבי״ם]. As he steps inside and takes in the surroundings, the prophet recognizes the deep effort and care the woman invested to honor him. Seeing this dedication awakens a strong desire within him to show his gratitude, wishing to honor her in return and bring her joy for her kind deeds [אברבנאל].
