וַתָּבֹ֞א אֶל־אִ֤ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־הָהָ֔ר וַֽתַּחֲזֵ֖ק בְּרַגְלָ֑יו וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ גֵּיחֲזִ֜י לְהׇדְפָ֗הּ וַיֹּ֩אמֶר֩ אִ֨ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים הַרְפֵּה־לָהּ֙ כִּֽי־נַפְשָׁ֣הּ מָֽרָה־לָ֔הּ וַֽיהֹוָה֙ הֶעְלִ֣ים מִמֶּ֔נִּי וְלֹ֥א הִגִּ֖יד לִֽי׃

A dramatic encounter on a mountain reveals the intense pain of a grieving mother, willing to abandon all social norms and etiquette to save her son. Upon reaching the prophet, she immediately falls to the ground and grabs his feet. This physical act is a deep plea, showing total surrender and an acceptance of his authority [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It also sends a clear message that she will not let go until he agrees to return with her [מלבי״ם].

The prophet's servant, Gehazi, quickly steps in and tries to push her away [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that Gehazi does this to protect the prophet's honor, feeling it is improper and inappropriate for a woman to get so close to him. However, others suggest he wants to push her away for her own dignity, trying to stop her from humiliating herself by kissing his feet [רד״ק], or simply to halt such an extreme display of submission [רלב״ג].

The prophet stops his servant and tells him to leave her alone. He recognizes that basic manners and etiquette must be pushed aside in the face of her profound suffering [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He openly admits that God has hidden the truth from him, leaving him unaware of the cause of her pain. There are different views on the timing of this hidden knowledge. Some explain that the matter was hidden when the tragedy occurred and remains hidden from him even in that moment [מצודת דוד]. Others suggest the truth was only hidden up until that hour, and exactly as she falls at his feet, God reveals the situation to him through prophecy [רד״ק, צאינה וראינה].

From this lack of early warning, the prophet gains an important spiritual insight. Usually, when God brings punishment upon a person, He reveals His secret to His prophets in advance so they can pray for mercy. Because God kept this hidden from him, the prophet understands that the disaster did not strike the woman as a punishment for a sin, but rather happened naturally as a result of illness [מלבי״ם].
