II Kings 4:7Sefaria

וַתָּבֹ֗א וַתַּגֵּד֙ לְאִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכִי֙ מִכְרִ֣י אֶת־הַשֶּׁ֔מֶן וְשַׁלְּמִ֖י אֶת־[נִשְׁיֵ֑ךְ] (נשיכי) וְאַ֣תְּ (בניכי) [וּבָנַ֔יִךְ] תִּֽחְיִ֖י בַּנּוֹתָֽר׃ {פ}

After the miraculous flow of oil stops, the woman hesitates to take matters into her own hands. She returns to the prophet to report what happened and ask for his guidance, not wanting to act against his wishes [רלב"ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. She faces a few dilemmas. Economically, she wonders whether to sell the oil immediately or wait for market prices to rise [רש"י, צאינה וראינה]. She also harbors practical and religious concerns, questioning whether she must separate tithes from miraculously generated oil, and fearing that Ahab's royal family might hear of her sudden wealth and seize it by force. The prophet assures her that miraculous oil requires no tithes and that God will protect her from the authorities [רד"ק].

The prophet instructs her to sell the oil and settle her debts with her creditors [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, רלב"ג, רד"ק], promising that the earnings will perfectly cover the amount she owes [מלבי"ם]. He then tells her that she and her sons will live on what remains. The primary approach among commentators is that the leftover money from the sale will provide for her family's ongoing daily needs [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, the blessing will remain within the original flask itself, continuing to produce oil and sustain her indefinitely [מלבי"ם]. This ongoing provision is said to last even until the resurrection of the dead [רש"י, מלבי"ם].

The instruction to live off this abundance raises a fundamental question, as a general rule dictates that one should not derive personal benefit from miracles. Some explain that because the prophet gave an explicit command in the name of God, any restriction was removed. Others offer a more natural explanation: the woman's financial success was not merely due to the volume of oil, but rather a sharp increase in its market value. Because a price increase is a normal economic event rather than a supernatural one, she was permitted to enjoy the profits [נחל שורק, חומת אנך]. This sudden spike in the market occurred because the miracle drew all the surrounding abundance of oil into her home, creating a widespread shortage that naturally drove up prices [אהבת יהונתן].

On a spiritual level, these events serve as an allegory for the human soul and its purpose. The oil represents the Commandments a person fulfills, the rewards of which are meant to be stored in God's treasuries for the World to Come. The instruction to pay her debts symbolizes the human obligation to complete all the duties one is bound to perform. Finally, the promise that she will live on the remainder teaches that while the principal reward for observing the Commandments is preserved for the afterlife, a person can still enjoy the fruits of their good deeds in this world. This is especially true for acts of charity and kindness performed beyond one's basic obligations [אדרת אליהו].
