מלכים ב, פרק ד׳, פסוק ל״ג

II Kings 4:33Sefaria

In moments of absolute solitude, the prophet Elisha prepares to perform his greatest miracle and revive a lifeless child, following in the exact footsteps of his master, Elijah [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His first action is to completely isolate the space. By shutting the door so that only he and the boy remain inside, Elisha ensures that his prayer will be entirely focused and free from any distraction. This privacy also keeps onlookers from witnessing the highly concealed actions he is about to undertake [רלב"ג].

Once the room is sealed, Elisha turns to God in prayer, revealing a fundamental difference between resurrecting the dead and the other miracles he has performed. In previous events, such as healing toxic water, multiplying oil, or making iron float, Elisha acted directly through his prophetic power without needing to pray. However, returning a soul to a lifeless body is an act that is never handed over to a messenger; it rests exclusively in the hands of God. The prophet can only prepare the physical vessel to receive life anew, while God alone restores the spirit [מלבי"ם].

After praying for a new spirit to descend, Elisha begins to prepare the boy's body. He stretches himself over the child, aligning his own mouth, eyes, and hands with those of the boy, seeking to transfer breath, senses, and natural life force. He warms the physical flesh, operating on the principle that a miracle cannot occur in a complete void; it requires a natural, existing foundation upon which to take hold. According to mystical tradition, the child's original life force was inherently weak. Through his intense prayer and deliberate physical actions, which also include pacing back and forth across the room, Elisha works to draw down a new, much stronger spirit, effectively preparing the child for a complete rebirth [מלבי"ם, צאינה וראינה].
