The divine promise granted to the forefathers of the nation was passed down as an unbroken chain from generation to generation. The primary approach among commentators is that the original covenant made with Abraham is the exact same matter confirmed by the subsequent oath.

This covenant and oath, given to Abraham concerning his future offspring, were directed exclusively toward Isaac. [רד״ק] explains that this specific focus served a clear purpose: to exclude Ishmael and the sons of Keturah from the divine promise. The oath itself was initially sworn to Abraham during the Binding of Isaac, and God later repeated and confirmed His word directly to Isaac himself.

This unbroken chain of covenant and oath then passed to Jacob, deliberately excluding Esau. Ultimately, it was established as an enduring law and an everlasting covenant for Jacob's chosen descendants, the Israelites [רד״ק].
