Fear of God is often misunderstood as an unsettling or threatening force. In truth, it is the vital foundation that grants the world its stability and continued existence. A universal call goes out to all inhabitants of the earth to tremble and be filled with awe. There is a profound contrast between a mortal ruler and God. When a human king senses fear among his subjects, he might exploit it, inflicting greater terror and bringing ruin to their homes. God's nature is the exact opposite. It is precisely when humanity stands in awe of Him that the earth becomes steady and avoids collapse. Through His justice, the wicked face consequences, while the upright and the world as a whole achieve a firm, enduring existence.
Because of this, the fear of God should never be a source of worry. His ultimate goal is to repair and settle the world, and destruction only occurs when humanity casts off this reverence and turns to sin [רש״י]. While the world may often appear fragile and shaky, it stands securely on its foundation only when all its inhabitants submit to and honor God [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This profound awe stems from recognizing the sheer power of His wonders. When true faith spreads across the globe and all nations unite to serve God, the world will become firmly rooted in this belief, never to stray from it again [רלב״ג]. Taking a slightly different approach, the resulting stability can also be understood as a direct decree upon creation itself. In this view, the earth is commanded to stand firm on its base and not fall, enduring for as long as God wills it to exist [מצודת דוד].
