דברי הימים א, פרק ט״ז, פסוק כ״ז

I Chronicles 16:27Sefaria

ה֤וֹד וְהָדָר֙ לְפָנָ֔יו עֹ֥ז וְחֶדְוָ֖ה בִּמְקֹמֽוֹ׃

The presence of God is defined by absolute beauty, power, and joy, standing in sharp contrast to the emptiness of idolatry. True majesty and splendor are rooted directly before Him [מצודת דוד]. These qualities are vividly expressed through His actions, which possess a perfect beauty that becomes clear when observing nature and the created world [רלב״ג]. This living, active splendor serves as proof of a true God. It highlights the profound difference between Him and man-made idols, which are lifeless and helpless, remaining exactly where they are placed [רש״י].

Alongside this beauty, immense strength and joy fill God's presence. His strength represents an exclusive power to act entirely according to His will, even holding the ability to change the very laws of nature [רלב״ג]. Joy, in its purest sense, naturally surrounds Him [מצודת ציון]. Historically, the profound power and happiness found wherever the Ark of the Covenant rested created a striking contrast with the wailing and crying experienced by the Philistines when the Ark was captured and held in their fields [רד״ק].

On a deeper spiritual level, the truest and most complete form of joy exists only at God's level. While physical and material pleasures are naturally limited, supreme joy flows from spiritual understanding. Because God's understanding is the absolute highest, the ultimate peak of joy is found with Him. This concept serves as a reminder that genuine happiness is spiritual rather than material, and it is something people should actively strive to achieve. It is this exact understanding that forms the basis for the traditional blessing recited for a groom, declaring that "joy is in His dwelling" [רלב״ג].
