I Chronicles 16:37Sefaria

King David structures the daily worship before the Ark of the Covenant by officially assigning a dedicated team to manage the ongoing service. He appoints Asaph and his brothers to remain at the site, with Asaph specifically entrusted to organize and direct the daily functions of the service [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that this service focused on music and song. The role of Asaph and his fellow singers was to stand constantly before the Ark, filling the space with their voices and instruments. However, another perspective adds that their duties extended to bringing burnt offerings. Although Asaph and his brothers were not priests, this practice was acceptable at the time because the Ark rested at a minor altar. At such a location, individuals who were not priests were allowed to offer sacrifices, unlike the great altar in Gibeon where only priests officiated [רד״ק].

The rhythm of this worship was highly structured, requiring the team to perform specific duties tailored to each day. For the Levites, this meant carefully selecting and performing the exact song that matched the unique character of the day or the specific events occurring at the time This dedicated service followed a strict, continuous schedule, taking place every evening and morning [רש״י].
