Giving God proper honor merges deep spiritual recognition with concrete physical actions. To truly honor God means offering the respect that perfectly matches His name [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This level of respect grows from the understanding that His very name proves He is the Master of all things, and His praise is a direct reflection of that name [רש"י]. Beyond internal recognition, another vital way to honor Him is by publicly sharing and acknowledging His wonderful actions in the world [רלב"ג].
Honoring God also demands active participation. People are called to physically lift and bring a gift or offering to honor Him [מצודת ציון, רלב"ג]. Along with bringing an offering, the act of bowing down reinforces the reality that majesty and splendor are always present before Him [רש"י].
This physical act of reverence takes place within a setting of holy splendor, referring to a physical space made beautiful and sacred. This can mean the tent housing the Ark of the Covenant, beautified by its holiness [מצודת דוד], or the Temple itself, where God's word rests in ultimate physical beauty. The tangible beauty of this holy place serves a specific purpose: it is meant to inspire people and awaken a deep sense of wonder at God's amazing deeds [רלב"ג]. However, serving God in such a complete and magnificent setting was only partially achieved during the era of the Hasmoneans. This perfect vision of worship will only reach its absolute fulfillment in the days of the Messiah [רלב"ג].
