I Chronicles 17:16Sefaria

David's reaction to the divine prophecy he receives is defined by profound humility. He is struck by the vast distance between his modest beginnings and his exalted role as king. Seeking closeness to God, David approaches the location of the Ark [מצודת דוד]. However, his posture in this sacred space raises an interesting issue, as sitting is generally strictly forbidden in holy areas. Commentators offer two ways to understand his behavior. Some explain that a unique legal exception exists, granting permission to sit exclusively to kings of the Davidic dynasty. Others suggest that his action does not involve physical sitting at all, but rather describes him staying and lingering thoughtfully in the holy space [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Overwhelmed by his sense of lowliness, David questions his own worthiness and the merit of his family line. He views himself as a small and insignificant person [רד"ק], and his wonder stems from an acute awareness of his complex family background, specifically his descent from Ruth the Moabite [מצודת דוד]. Despite his perceived unworthiness, he expresses deep gratitude to God for bringing him to this exact point in his life [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that his thankfulness centers on his remarkable journey to the throne and the high status he now holds. David acknowledges that God personally took him from the sheep pastures and elevated him to rule as king
