I Kings 10:20Sefaria

King Solomon's royal throne was a masterpiece of precise engineering and extraordinary artistry, unmatched by any other kingdom in history. A series of steps led directly up to the royal seat [מצודת דוד]. Upon these steps stood twelve lion statues, arranged symmetrically with six on one side and six on the other, ensuring that a lion stood on either side of every single step [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The specific choice of the lion and the number twelve carried deep symbolic weight. The lion was selected because it served as the emblem on the flag of the tribe of Judah. The number twelve pointed to the twelve ancestors in the royal lineage, going from Solomon back to Judah, or from David back to Jacob, while also representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

Beyond its physical beauty, the structure of the throne held a profound conceptual parallel to the Copper Sea located in the Temple. The Copper Sea, which held the waters of kindness, rested upon twelve ox statues that represented the ox on the left side of the Divine Chariot. In a matching design, the throne of judgment was supported by twelve lions, representing the right side of the Divine Chariot. This deliberate pairing was intended to blend the gentle trait of kindness directly into the administration of justice [מלבי״ם].

The complexity of the throne was so profound that no other nation, either before or after Solomon's reign, could ever replicate it. Although Solomon designed it through his unique wisdom, it remained entirely impossible to copy. A legend highlights this unmatched craftsmanship, noting that when one of the throne's legs eventually broke, the greatest expert artisans were gathered to fix it, yet not a single one could repair the structure to match Solomon's original creation [חומת אנך].
