The arrival of the Queen of Sheba in Jerusalem was designed as a public and demanding test of Solomon's wisdom. She appeared in magnificent splendor, entirely suited to her royal status. Although she could have traveled comfortably by sea, she deliberately chose the arduous overland route through the desert, a decision that reflected her high dignity [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
Because of this demanding desert journey, she arrived with an immense presence. There are two primary ways to understand the nature of this arrival. One approach suggests she was accompanied by a vast entourage of people, acting as a necessary security force to guard her along the dangerous desert roads [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. Another perspective explains that she brought an enormous accumulation of wealth, property, and highly precious stones [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג, אברבנאל].
When the queen finally stood before Solomon, she began to share everything she had kept hidden within herself. These were not ordinary thoughts, but complex riddles and deep secrets she had guarded her entire life. She had deliberately avoided sharing them with anyone before this moment. This strict secrecy ensured that Solomon could not have heard the riddles from any other source, guaranteeing a true and challenging test of his abilities [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].
Even during the test, she did not state her questions plainly. Instead, she spoke in hints, riddles, and brief outlines [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך]. Yet, Solomon possessed wisdom granted by God, allowing him to pierce through the surface of her words. He understood her outward speech as a mere messenger of her heart, enabling him to completely decode her most deeply guarded thoughts. Ultimately, he answered every question she posed, leaving absolutely no mystery unresolved [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך, אברבנאל].
