ירמיהו, פרק ל״ה, פסוק י״ב

Jeremiah 35:12Sefaria

וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶֽל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ לֵאמֹֽר׃

Following a successful loyalty test of the Rechabite family, God delivers a sharp moral lesson to the entire nation. The unwavering dedication of this single family serves as a mirror, exposing the behavior of the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem. God urges the nation to learn from the Rechabites, who strictly observed the instructions of their ancestor [אברבנאל].

The comparison deliberately centers on their refusal to drink wine, rather than their avoidance of building homes or planting fields. There is a specific reason for this distinction. If the focus were on their lack of agricultural property, the people of Judah could easily dismiss the comparison. They might argue that the Rechabites avoided farming simply because they were foreigners with no inherited portion in the Land of Israel. However, their refusal to drink wine stems entirely from absolute obedience to their ancestor's command, not from a natural dislike of the drink. This creates a powerful rebuke: if a family can so faithfully honor a human covenant, the nation of Israel should certainly honor and obey the voice of God.

Yet, the history of the nation shows a consistent refusal to listen. At Mount Sinai, they heard God speak directly, only to immediately break His commands through the sin of the Golden Calf. Over the generations following the death of Moses, God continually sent His prophets to guide them. This constant prophetic guidance was a unique gift to Israel, unmatched in any other nation. God sent these messengers with daily persistence, much like a worker rising early to begin his tasks.

The prophets did not burden the people with harsh demands. They simply asked for repentance, urging the nation to turn away from evil by abandoning sin and to do good by correcting their actions. Their primary focus was the complete rejection of idolatry, a sin equal in weight to all others combined, so that the people could continue living securely in their land. Despite these relentless efforts, the people chose to shut their ears and ignore the commandments.
