Jeremiah 35:19Sefaria

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹא־יִכָּרֵ֨ת אִ֜ישׁ לְיוֹנָדָ֧ב בֶּן־רֵכָ֛ב עֹמֵ֥ד לְפָנַ֖י כׇּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃ {פ}

Unwavering loyalty to family tradition brings profound spiritual rewards. The family of Rechab earned a divine promise of eternal survival and elevated status because of their stubborn dedication to the customs of their ancestors. The assurance that their family line will never end means that the dynasty of Jonadab will continue forever [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Even if the family eventually ceases to exist as a distinct, independent group, their descendants are guaranteed to live on eternally among the Israelites [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The promise that these descendants will always stand before God is understood in several ways. One approach views this in a spiritual light, suggesting that the family will remain constantly under God's watchful care [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They will be deeply reverent people who humbly devote themselves to His service [מצודת דוד].

Another perspective, based on the Sages and the Targum, suggests that standing before God refers to active participation in holy work. This creates a natural question regarding how the family could enter the Temple to serve, as such actions were forbidden even to regular Israelites, let alone to outsiders. To resolve this, some explain that the daughters of the family married Priests, allowing their grandsons to ultimately offer sacrifices on the altar [רד״ק]. Alternatively, this holy work is understood as achieving greatness in Torah study. According to this view, the descendants earned the privilege to sit on the Sanhedrin and teach Torah to the Israelites [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

This unique reward was granted because the family strictly maintained their ancestral practices of avoiding wine and living in tents over many generations. However, the divine promise does not require every future generation to maintain this specific lifestyle forever. Instead, it grants them the enduring privilege to stand before God as a direct result of their ancestors' steadfast loyalty [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
