Job 10:12Sefaria

Human existence is a delicate blend of physical and spiritual wonders, serving as a constant testament to divine kindness. Because a person does not exist before birth and has no prior merit, the very gift of life is an act of pure, unconditional favor This kindness embraces a person from the earliest moments of formation in the womb until they emerge into the world [רש״י, רמב״ן].

The purpose of this divine favor is to allow the soul to descend into this world to fulfill Commandments. By doing so, the soul earns its reward through active effort rather than receiving it as unearned charity in the upper realms [חומת אנך]. However, this experience is complex. Some emphasize that the kindness is primarily directed at the physical body, which is given the chance to live from the dust. For the pure soul, the descent into a physical form is actually experienced as a form of suffering [אלשיך].

Sustaining this connection between body and soul requires a continuous mechanism. The primary approach among commentators is that a direct decree from God is what keeps the spirit anchored inside the body The human body is incredibly fragile, compared to a vessel full of holes, and only God's command prevents the life force from simply escaping [מצודת דוד]. This miracle is especially visible in the womb, where a fetus survives without breathing natural air solely because of a divine decree [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective views this sustaining force as God's constant, active care. He continuously oversees and provides for His creations; without this constant attention, they would immediately cease to exist [רמב״ן]. Others explain that God appoints guards [רש״י], or establishes natural systems, such as body heat, which act as a bridge. These systems house the pure soul within the physical matter and protect it from fading away

A completely different angle reverses the dynamic of who is guarding whom. Instead of God's decree guarding the spirit, it is the human spirit that guards God's Commandments [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In this view, a person eagerly observes God's instructions and creates boundaries to protect them, knowing that fulfilling even one Commandment perfectly secures life in the World to Come [חומת אנך]. Finally, reflecting on the underlying tension between the physical and the spiritual, the soul naturally yearns to ascend back to its upper root. It remains confined within the body only because it faithfully obeys God's command to stay there [אלשיך].
