Nehemiah 7:70Sefaria

Rebuilding the House of God and restoring the daily Temple services during the return to Zion required an immense financial undertaking. To fund this massive project, family leaders organized and stepped forward, providing both the wealth and the necessary supplies to bring the vision to life. They contributed their funds directly into the treasury of the House of God [מצודת דוד]. The gifts included twenty thousand gold coins, the standard currency of the era [רס״ג, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Beyond financial support, the leaders also provided special garments designed specifically for the priests to wear while performing their sacred duties [מצודת דוד].

Nehemiah himself made a highly generous personal contribution to the cause. However, because the family leaders were so numerous, their collective donation far exceeded his individual gift [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A close look at the exact numbers reveals a noticeable difference when compared to the parallel historical records in the Book of Ezra. Ezra documents significantly higher amounts of gold and silver given by the leaders, as well as a different distribution of wealth between the heads of families and the general public. Rather than viewing this as a conflict, these accounts can be understood as two separate fundraising campaigns. The initial wave of donations was documented by Ezra. A second wave occurred much later, likely around the time Nehemiah arrived in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes. Knowing that the first campaign was already recorded by Ezra, Nehemiah chose to document only the second wave of contributions [מלבי״ם].

Another way to understand the differing numbers is through a shift in the population over time. Ezra specifically counted the direct returnees arriving from Babylon. In contrast, Nehemiah’s records included people who joined from other parts of the region, or new family leaders who stepped forward to volunteer at a later stage. These later contributors were the ones documented in the genealogical records that Nehemiah eventually discovered [מלבי״ם].
