פרשת במדבר

Numbers 1:14Sefaria

לְגָ֕ד אֶלְיָסָ֖ף בֶּן־דְּעוּאֵֽל׃

The names carried by the leaders of the Israelite tribes often hold deep significance, reflecting both their historical actions and the rewards they received. The names of the leader of the tribe of Gad and his father tell a story of loyalty and blessing. The leader's name implies that God added wealth and prosperity to the tribe. This divine reward was earned through the actions hinted at by the father's name, which suggests "knowing God." The tribe demonstrated this deep knowledge and dedication to God's commandments by willingly going out to battle to assist their fellow Israelites [פענח רזא].

The preservation of these names in ancient records reveals fascinating details about how they evolved and were recorded over time. For instance, while some early manuscripts spell the leader's name with an additional letter, the universally accepted tradition maintains a specific, shorter spelling [מנחת שי].

A more complex evolution surrounds the father's name. In this instance, it begins with a 'D', while in other places it appears with an 'R'. Some ancient translations attempted to artificially make this uniform throughout the text by choosing just one version. However, the true reason for the variation is that his original name was actually longer, carrying the powerful meaning "Arm of God." Over time, this original name was shortened into two distinct versions by dropping different letters. This natural evolution of dropping letters is a recognized phenomenon in ancient records, frequently seen in the names of other nations and cities [שד״ל].
