Numbers 1:42Sefaria

The grand census of the Israelites in the desert reaches its conclusion with the tribe of Naphtali, the twelfth and final group to be counted. Because they were the last tribe in line, their counting process naturally differed from the rest. The primary approach among commentators notes that they were identified simply by elimination. During the census, all the names of the army were initially gathered into one master record. As tribal leaders extracted the names of their people into separate records, they designated those individuals as belonging to their specific group. By the time they reached the end of the process, the only names left in the master record were those of Naphtali. There was no need to transfer them to a new list or reassign them

This dynamic played out physically in the camp as well. As the people of the first eleven tribes stepped forward out of the main crowd, the remaining group naturally formed the final tribe without needing to actively identify themselves. This subtle detail reflects an authentic, real-time account of the event as it unfolded [רש״ר הירש].

Because Naphtali was the final tribe, a question arises regarding the need to count them at all. Moses already knew the total population of the Israelites from an earlier census, meaning he could have easily determined Naphtali's population through simple subtraction While one perspective notes that populations fluctuate and people may have died between counts [שד״ל], there is a deeper reason for their active participation. The census was never merely a statistical exercise. As each person passed before Moses and was called by name, they received a personal blessing and a connection to God and His presence. If Naphtali's population had been determined by a mathematical calculation, the people would have lost this profound spiritual merit. Therefore, Moses made sure to count them individually, face to face, just like the rest of the nation

Beyond the administrative and spiritual aspects of the census, the unique manner in which Naphtali is recorded may also relate to the specific makeup of the tribe's families. One perspective suggests that the families of Naphtali experienced a unique population growth where daughters significantly outnumbered sons In contrast, another viewpoint argues the exact opposite, suggesting that the tribe consisted exclusively of sons without any daughters [מנחת שי].
