במדבר, פרק כ״ה, פסוק ט׳

פרשת בלק

Numbers 25:9Sefaria

וַיִּהְי֕וּ הַמֵּתִ֖ים בַּמַּגֵּפָ֑ה אַרְבָּעָ֥ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים אָֽלֶף׃ {פ}

The devastating aftermath of moral corruption takes a heavy toll, demanding a grim accounting of the fallen. Tallying the dead serves to highlight the sheer scale of the disaster, much like a shepherd who counts his flock after a wolf attack to understand the extent of the damage [רא״ש].

The loss of twenty-four thousand lives is exceptionally severe. For comparison, the earlier sin of the Golden Calf resulted in three thousand deaths. This stark contrast reveals a painful reality: idolatry fueled by physical lust and bodily desires spreads through a population much faster and more broadly than a purely theological or spiritual error [רש ר הירש]. Sins rooted in promiscuity have a destructive ripple effect, where the immoral actions of a few individuals can ultimately cause the downfall of tens of thousands [רא״ש].

Despite the staggering number of victims, a specific tradition suggests that these casualties were not originally from the core population of the Israelites. Instead, they belonged to the mixed multitude who had joined the nation and intermingled with the women of the tribe of Simeon. This plague essentially wiped out the remaining members of this group who had survived previous divine punishments, such as the fallout from the Golden Calf [חומת אנך].

Even from this deep point of despair, a promise of hope emerges for the future. In the present world, the people fall prey to destructive urges, leading to a decrease in their population where the survivors must be counted. However, a time will come when the Israelites will multiply beyond measure, becoming as uncountable as the sand of the sea, and they will earn the title of living children of God [רא״ש].
