פרשת פנחס

Numbers 28:24Sefaria

Passover brings a unique sense of stability and constancy to the Temple service, reflecting a time when the nation dedicates itself entirely to its spiritual purpose. Throughout the seven days of the holiday, the exact same number of sacrifices is offered daily. This steady consistency stands in stark contrast to the holiday of Sukkot, where the number of sacrificed bulls decreases with each passing day [רש״י, מלבי״ם, רש״ר הירש]. Furthermore, while other parts of the Torah, such as the Book of Leviticus, highlight the agricultural milestones of the Land, the focus here remains exclusively on the specific offerings designated for the holiday itself [חזקוני].

These offerings function as a form of spiritual sustenance, preparing the proper conditions within the nation for God to dwell among them. They are given over to the fire, symbolizing a deep devotion to the burning power of Divine law. This act serves as an absolute expression of fulfilling God's will in everyday, practical life [רש״ר הירש].

Regarding the accompanying drink and grain offerings, different perspectives emerge. Some view these additions as a direct extension of the holiday's main fire offerings [חזקוני, רש״ר הירש]. However, another approach connects them specifically to the regular daily sacrifice. This view explains that the instructions teach an important rule about the order of the Temple service. While the daily sacrifice must always be offered first, taking precedence over the special holiday offerings, its accompanying drink offerings do not share this strict urgency. They can be brought much later, even after all the other sacrifices of the day have been completely finished [בכור שור].
