Numbers 28:3Sefaria

The daily continual offering serves as the heartbeat of communal Temple service, expressing an unbroken connection between the people and God. The instructions for this sacrifice reflect profound concepts regarding time, absolute devotion, and the complete rejection of idolatry. Although a general instruction was already given to the entire nation, the directive is repeated to place a specific responsibility on the legal and spiritual leadership. The primary approach among commentators is that the Rabbinic court is specifically warned to supervise the process and ensure the daily offerings are executed flawlessly Conversely, some view this repetition not as a directive to the leadership, but as a special declaration emphasizing that the obligation for this offering rests equally upon the entire nation [רש ר הירש].

As a fire offering raised on the altar [ביאור שטיינזלץ], it carries strict limitations. The command defines an exact, unalterable measure, negating any thought that the quantity of the sacrifices can be increased or decreased [אור החיים]. Furthermore, the offering must be brought with the purest of intentions, directed solely toward God. This strict requirement prevents the sacrifice from being invalidated by any improper thoughts during the service [רבנו בחיי].

The animals selected for this purpose must be unblemished lambs exactly in their first year, without the addition of even a single day or hour. They must also be completely identical in their physical appearance [רבנו בחיי]. Beyond these physical requirements, the choice of lambs carries deep symbolic weight. They represent the suppression and washing away of the Israelites' sins, purifying the nation until the people are as clean as a one-year-old child [שפתי כהן]. The unblemished nature of the animals further represents the demand for an individual's complete and absolute devotion to God [רש ר הירש].

The daily requirement consists of two lambs, one offered in the morning and one in the afternoon The phrasing of the command dictates that the slaughter must be oriented in direct relation to the sun. The primary approach among commentators is that this specific orientation was designed to uproot idolatry. Ancient nations worshipped the sun at its rising in the east and its setting in the west. To distance the Israelites from this practice, the morning offering was slaughtered on the western side of the altar, while the afternoon offering was slaughtered on the eastern side. By turning their backs to the sun, the priests actively weakened idolatrous beliefs To ensure precision in positioning the animal relative to the sun and the altar, the slaughter was performed using a system of rings fixed in the courtyard floor Although these rings were installed during a later period by the High Priest Yochanan, the underlying principle of slaughtering in opposition to the sun is a fundamental law Throughout the day, these two lambs act as defenders for the Israelites, shielding them from strict divine justice; the morning offering atones for the sins of the night, while the afternoon offering atones for the sins of the day

As a continual burnt offering, the sacrifice is offered with absolute permanence [ריב״א]. It is entirely consumed by the altar's fire, unlike other festival sacrifices which may be partially eaten [העמק דבר]. This unbroken continuity of morning and evening expresses a deep spiritual reality. Day and night are not separate entities, but rather one complete cycle of life in which a person dedicates themselves to the illuminating and purifying fire of the Torah and Commandments, moving in an eternal progression toward God [רש ר הירש].
