Numbers 5:4Sefaria

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵן֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיְשַׁלְּח֣וּ אוֹתָ֔ם אֶל־מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה כֵּ֥ן עָשׂ֖וּ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {פ}

Once the Israelite tribes were fully organized under their banners and the Divine Presence rested among them, a new standard of holiness was established. This elevated spiritual state made it necessary to remove impure individuals from the heart of the community [פענח רזא]. This physical cleansing of the camp was deeply intertwined with moral purity, serving as a necessary foundation before addressing laws dealing with theft, betrayal, and harming others [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The directive was carried out immediately, even before the Israelites began their travels through the desert [אבן עזרא, חזקוני].

Those who contracted impurity were sent to a specific, fenced-in area located just beyond the tribal camps, a space shared with converts and the mixed multitude [צפנת פענח]. Although they were removed from the main camp, they were housed closely nearby, showing that the Israelites did not banish them out of a natural fear of airborne, contagious diseases [העמק דבר]. Rather, the removal was driven entirely by absolute obedience to the command of God [שפתי כהן]. The specific nature of God's communication prompted the people to act strictly according to the literal written law at that time, removing all categories of impure individuals equally and without distinction [העמק דבר].

The execution of this decree revealed a remarkable level of mutual cooperation. The courts and the general public actively facilitated the removal, while the impure individuals themselves fully participated. They did not hide their condition, resist, or require any physical force to be moved. Instead, they left willingly, accepting the judgment with love [חזקוני, מלבי״ם, תורה תמימה]. The rest of the nation responded with matching kindness, treating the impure individuals warmly and never pushing them further away than the law strictly required [שפתי כהן].

On a deeper moral level, sending away the impure symbolizes the uprooting of negative character traits from society. Each type of impurity reflects a specific flaw in the human spirit. Leprosy represents stinginess and a narrow perspective. A bodily discharge symbolizes an obsession with luxury and physical desires. Finally, impurity from contact with a corpse stands for selfishness and extreme self-absorption. Removing these impurities from the camp serves as a broader call to cleanse the community of negative forces, paving the way for a holy society built on generosity, spirituality, and goodwill [שפתי כהן, חתם סופר].
