Proverbs 10:25Sefaria

The world is subject to sudden shocks and crises, and in these testing moments, a deep contrast emerges between the temporary nature of the wicked and the eternal stability of the righteous. A sudden storm or disaster often strikes without warning The primary approach among commentators is that the wicked are quickly and easily wiped from the world, disappearing as fast as a passing storm Because the wicked lack strong roots in reality, their existence is merely random and temporary. When trouble strikes, it easily uproots them A unique perspective adds that such a storm does not merely hit the wicked by chance; rather, it sweeps through the world specifically to destroy them [רלב״ג].

In stark contrast to this instability, the righteous stand strong against troubles. They are compared to a solid foundation that remains firmly in place, even if the building above it completely collapses However, the role of the righteous goes far beyond personal survival. The primary approach among commentators is that the righteous person is the very reason the entire world exists, actively guarding and protecting reality from harm [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. Even in a time filled with wicked people, a single righteous individual can serve as the foundation of the world and escape punishment. A clear example of this is the generation of the Flood, where the wicked were washed away in a storm, while Noah remained to rebuild the world anew [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

Beyond physical survival, the contrast between the two extends into spiritual and eternal realms. While the wicked are completely forgotten upon their death, the righteous continue to exist. Their children remain on earth, their souls live on forever like angels, and they are remembered for their wisdom and good deeds. Because of this enduring legacy, the righteous are considered alive even after they pass away Furthermore, during times of crisis, the wicked lack any power to help or cancel a harsh decree, leading to their downfall. The righteous, however, possess the spiritual strength to overturn disaster through their prayers. By doing so, they not only save themselves but serve as a pillar of support for the entire world [אמרי דעת].
