Proverbs 15:16Sefaria

טוֹב־מְ֭עַט בְּיִרְאַ֣ת יְהֹוָ֑ה מֵאוֹצָ֥ר רָ֝֗ב וּמְה֥וּמָה בֽוֹ׃

True value is not measured by the sheer size of a person's possessions, but by the moral and spiritual foundation upon which those possessions are built. A simple life sustained by spiritual wholeness far outweighs a massive fortune rooted in corruption [אמרי דעת].

The primary approach among commentators is that a small amount of money obtained honestly is deeply rewarding. Despite the daily struggles of poverty, honest earnings bring genuine success, stability, and a lasting blessing that protects a person and their children for years to come [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי]. In fact, having very little can actually serve as a personal advantage. A lack of material excess naturally preserves a person's humility, keeps them focused on living a life of moral perfection, and encourages them to constantly look toward God for support. This stands in sharp contrast to extreme wealth, which often breeds arrogance and rebellion against Him [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

Conversely, hoarding a vast treasure through wickedness, robbery, and extortion brings inevitable chaos. This turmoil manifests in several ways. Socially, it represents the bitter conflicts and the cries of the oppressed victims who were exploited to build that very fortune [רש״י, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Practically, it guarantees ruin. Wealth gathered through injustice is inherently unstable and will ultimately bring destruction and loss upon its owner [אבן עזרא, רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי]. Spiritually, this chaos takes the form of profound internal damage, slowly destroying the owner's soul and stripping away their spiritual happiness [מלבי״ם].

Moving beyond material wealth, this concept also applies to the pursuit of knowledge. It is far better for a person to acquire a modest amount of wisdom that aligns with their natural intellect and maintains their reverence for God. This is preferable to amassing a vast treasure of hidden mysteries and overly deep philosophical investigations. Overloading the mind with profound complexities can create internal confusion, potentially leading to a complete loss of faith and a disconnection from the practical observance of the Commandments [עמנואל הרומי].
