Proverbs 15:32Sefaria

How a person responds to criticism and moral guidance ultimately defines their spiritual and mental condition. Choosing to ignore discipline is an act of self-harm, while embracing correction forms the foundation of wisdom and self-control.

Those who reject moral guidance actively dismantle their own boundaries. This rejection can be seen as deactivating discipline entirely [מצודת ציון], or breaking through the protective fences of proper behavior [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, instead of wearing moral instruction proudly like a crown, such a person completely casts it away and leaves themselves exposed [אבן עזרא]. Because basic moral discipline is often rooted in the fear of future consequences for the soul, ignoring it means a person essentially despises their own inner being [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that rejecting discipline prevents the soul from reaching its true moral potential. A person who lives this way becomes like a wild animal, driven purely by physical urges. Their actions lead to punishment and ruin in this world and the next. By behaving this way, they show no concern for their own well-being, acting as though they actually hate their soul and wish to destroy it [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי].

On the other hand, a person who listens to correction engages in a completely different process. While basic moral discipline relies on fear, true correction is built on intellectual and logical reasoning [מלבי״ם]. The very act of listening to criticism with love is a necessary preparation for fulfilling the commandments and serving God. Even if someone begins with no knowledge of God's ways, simply choosing to listen serves as the tool to absorb and internalize proper guidance [אלשיך, עמנואל הרומי].

Through the process of hearing logical correction, a person acquires a heart. In this context, the heart represents the intellect, understanding, and the fear of God. Someone lacking this heart operates solely on physical impulses without any internal control. However, when they listen to reasoned criticism, they gain understanding and effectively purchase a new, educated mind, much like acquiring a valuable object [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. Beyond this personal spiritual and intellectual growth, the willingness to accept criticism carries a social benefit as well, as a person who takes correction gracefully also wins the hearts of the people around them [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
