Proverbs 15:33Sefaria

יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הֹוָה מוּסַ֣ר חׇכְמָ֑ה וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָב֣וֹד עֲנָוָֽה׃

Spiritual and moral growth is a step-by-step journey, where personal character traits act as the foundation for achieving wisdom and true respect. These achievements do not happen on their own; they require careful internal preparation.

The primary approach among commentators is that a deep fear of God serves as the necessary preparation and cause for gaining wisdom [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. In fact, this fear is considered the very essence of wisdom itself [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, another perspective reverses this order, suggesting that studying the discipline of wisdom is what actually humbles a person, ultimately leading them to fear God [עמנואל הרומי].

To understand the connection between the fear of God and wisdom, one must look at human nature. People naturally lean toward foolishness when following the desires of their hearts. Therefore, wisdom requires a system of strict discipline to hold back these negative internal forces. The fear of God provides this necessary restraint. When a person recognizes that a great King watches his actions and demands accountability, his soul becomes disciplined enough to truly accept wisdom [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, there is broad agreement that humility directly leads to honor [רש״י, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. Humility is not just the first step in time, but the most important essential quality required for true respect [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A humble person is naturally willing to listen, accept correction, and follow rational guidance toward the right path. In contrast, an arrogant person hardens his heart and refuses criticism. It is precisely this humble willingness to accept correction that ultimately brings a person honor [מלבי״ם]. This resulting honor is not just a passing social status. It is complete and profound, including both temporary respect in this world and eternal, spiritual honor in the world to come [עמנואל הרומי, אלשיך].
