The gap between what a person hides in their heart and what they present to the world stands at the center of God's judgment. A sharp contrast exists between hidden, corrupt intentions and speech that is beautiful, desirable, and refined like pure silver [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Such expressions of goodwill and kindness are deeply desired by God [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רלב״ג]. One way to understand this dynamic is by contrasting good and evil individuals. God detests the inner thoughts of a wicked person, as these hidden ideas are the very root and starting point of actual sins and corrupt behavior [רלב״ג]. In fact, an evil thought on its own is considered an abomination even before it is turned into action [מלבי״ם]. On the other hand, the thoughts and speech of good people are pure, serving as the complete opposite of the wicked [עמנואל הרומי].

Another major approach views this dynamic entirely through the lens of hypocrisy. In this light, God detests the individual who harbors dark intentions inside but outwardly speaks with pleasant, soothing words [אלשיך, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. Such individuals cunningly use soft and seemingly pure language to deceive those listening, masking their true, malicious goals [אלשיך, מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, speaking nicely is not enough on its own. For a person's words to be considered truly pure, they must be completely free from any trace of evil thought. True purity requires a perfect match between a person's inner reality and their outward expression [מצודת דוד, אמרי דעת, מלבי״ם].
