Proverbs 15:4Sefaria

Human speech carries fateful consequences, acting either as a source of deep healing or a destructive force that damages the soul. The words a person chooses reflect their inner state and ultimately determine whether they bring life or leave ruin in their wake. The primary approach among commentators is that positive communication is characterized by a soft, calm, and gentle delivery Such peaceful language soothes anger and makes listeners open and willing to accept what is being said Another perspective views this type of speech as possessing literal therapeutic power. It can act as moral guidance that cures foolishness [אבן עזרא], or as wise counsel that resolves difficult questions of faith. It also takes the form of sincere, heartfelt correction meant to guide a person back toward honesty [אלשיך]. Furthermore, this healing language includes words directed toward serving God [עמנואל הרומי], as well as the study of Torah and wisdom, which serves as a remedy for the flaws of human communication [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך]. Because of its life-giving nature, this positive speech is compared to a flourishing tree, granting health, happiness, and long life to both the speaker and the listener [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי], and ultimately leading to the World to Come [אלשיך].

In stark contrast is speech that deviates from innocence and honesty, twisting communication into something harmful This distortion takes many forms, such as foolish talk, gossip, and slander It can also manifest as harsh, blunt words [מצודת דוד] or as attempts to cast doubt on the teachings of the wise [אלשיך]. The consequence of such twisted speech is a profound breaking of the spirit, which impacts a person on multiple levels. Socially and emotionally, it causes sadness and deep disappointment [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It alienates others, ensuring that the speaker's requests are rejected and their personal desires are crushed Additionally, harsh words provoke the anger of enemies and invite physical danger, much like a tree that snaps under the pressure of a violent wind [רלב״ג].

Beyond the social fallout, destructive speech causes severe internal damage. Because the ability to speak represents the very essence of a human being, a distorted tongue reveals a deep internal sickness and a brokenness within the speaker's own mind and spirit [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Healing this deep spiritual flaw requires dedicated effort, achieved either through the study of Torah or by actively practicing humility [חומת אנך]. Finally, this brokenness is also understood as a direct, physical punishment from God, where the twisted words of the wicked ultimately bring about their own destruction through a fierce, sweeping wind [רש״י].
