Proverbs 15:24Sefaria

אֹ֣רַח חַ֭יִּים לְמַ֣עְלָה לְמַשְׂכִּ֑יל לְמַ֥עַן ס֝֗וּר מִשְּׁא֥וֹל מָֽטָּה׃

Life unfolds as a dynamic journey where a person must actively choose between spiritual elevation and the pull of physical desires. There is no standing still; moving forward requires relentless effort to avoid slipping into destruction.

The primary approach among commentators is that the proper path centers on the soul, the pursuit of wisdom, and fulfilling the will of God. This route leads upward, directing a person toward higher spiritual realms, holiness, and a deep connection to the divine source from which the soul was formed. Conversely, surrendering to bodily cravings drags a person downward into the depths, leading to eternal ruin [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי]. This upward momentum carries eternal significance; the greater the wisdom a person attains during their lifetime, the higher their soul will rise after passing away [אמרי דעת].

The journey upward is often compared to fighting gravity. The natural tendency of the physical body is to pull a person downward effortlessly. Spiritual growth, however, goes against this natural pull and demands intense, continuous effort. A wise person understands the need to actively climb the ladder of intellect to stay far away from the depths below [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי]. Anyone who wishes to avoid hitting the bottom must constantly work to climb higher [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While the upward direction is largely seen as a spiritual destination, another perspective views it as a state of constant availability. In this light, the proper path of life is always ready and standing directly in front of the wise person, waiting to be chosen [רש״י].

Recognizing that the essence of life exists in a higher realm offers a profound philosophical comfort. It helps the wise cope with the difficult reality of seeing wicked people succeed while good people suffer. A wise person naturally understands this greater truth. However, God still steps in at times to punish the wicked in this physical world. He does this to prevent the general public from being confused by what they see, ensuring they do not mistakenly follow the wrong path and fall into ruin [אלשיך].

On a practical, everyday level, the directions of upward and downward offer a psychological guide for healthy living. When it comes to spiritual growth, wisdom, and character development, a person should always look upward at those who have achieved more, using them as inspiration to improve. Yet, when dealing with material wealth and worldly possessions, a person should look downward at those who have less. This shift in focus allows a person to be genuinely happy with what they have, protecting them from sinking into sadness and frustration [חומת אנך].
