A deep divide exists among humanity regarding what brings them joy and how they navigate their lives. This gap is not merely a matter of personal preference, but a reflection of the inner structure of the soul and a person's level of self-control. On one side stands a person drawn to emptiness, while on the other stands a calculated individual whose happiness flows from walking a stable, meaningful path.
A person lacking sense, knowledge, or internal restraint [רש״י, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם] naturally gravitates toward foolishness. For such an individual, engaging in nonsense and committing foolish acts is an actual source of joy [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He delights in fleeting worldly possessions and feels no sadness over abandoning wisdom in favor of empty pursuits [עמנואל הרומי]. Without an internal compass to guide him, he even finds happiness when encountering doubts and absurdities [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that this individual views the very concept of joy as foolishness [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In a family setting, he might even consider it pointless to rejoice in the success of his wise son, assuming that his child's merits will provide no personal benefit to himself [אלשיך].
In stark contrast, a person of understanding approaches life entirely differently. He finds his true joy in walking an upright path [מצודת דוד] and actively seeks out matters of genuine wisdom and meaning rather than chasing illusions [ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. He deliberately looks for a straight road to travel [אבן עזרא], acting in a calculated manner to reach his goals through proper and correct means [רלב״ג]. Because of his deep internal understanding, he does not need external guidance or the threat of punishment to stay on track; instead, he walks an upright path naturally and independently [מלבי״ם].
This straightforward journey extends into both the practical and spiritual realms. Rather than relying on the merits of his children, the person of understanding paves his own path of good deeds to earn a place in the World to Come, while also actively guiding his son along a proper path [אלשיך]. Ultimately, his profound wisdom helps him discover the precise and correct route to navigate both the natural world and the spiritual realms [עמנואל הרומי].
