Proverbs 15:17Sefaria

ט֤וֹב אֲרֻחַ֣ת יָ֭רָק וְאַהֲבָה־שָׁ֑ם מִשּׁ֥וֹר אָ֝ב֗וּס וְשִׂנְאָה־בֽוֹ׃

True enjoyment in daily life is measured not by the cost of the ingredients on the table, but by the emotional and spiritual atmosphere in the room. A life of modesty accompanied by peace and affection holds infinitely more value than a life of luxury saturated with hostility and tension.

A routine, everyday meal [מצודת ציון] consisting of the simplest and cheapest vegetables [ביאור שטיינזלץ] is far superior to a feast of rich meats when the emotional environments differ. An animal force-fed to be fattened [רש״י], or one kept at a trough with endless food [עמנואל הרומי], represents extreme material abundance. Yet, having access to such a royal feast is undesirable if it comes with strife. It is simply a better state of being to eat a modest meal in peace [אבן עזרא, עמנואל הרומי]. The primary approach among commentators is that love and friendship sweeten even the plainest food, whereas hatred and arguments ruin the taste of the highest quality meat. Because hatred breeds conflict, external wealth and physical pleasure mean little compared to inner tranquility and trust in God.

This principle extends into everyday social and financial behaviors. In the realm of hospitality, it is better to serve a poor guest a meager portion of vegetables with a warm, loving smile than to offer rich meat with an angry expression [רש״י]. From a financial perspective, this serves as practical guidance for those struggling economically. It is wiser for a person to be satisfied with basic food, even keeping special occasions like Sabbaths and holidays as simple as ordinary weekdays, as long as they live in peace with their surroundings. This is far better than taking out loans to buy expensive meat for feasts, which ultimately brings the hatred of creditors when the debts cannot be repaid [אלשיך].

On a deeper spiritual level, this contrast illustrates the proper path in life. It is preferable to limit physical pleasures and dedicate one's life to loving God and acquiring wisdom, rather than chasing after worldly desires that might cause a person to rebel and turn against the right path [עמנואל הרומי]. This dynamic also mirrors how God relates to people. A small, simple offering from a poor person who is loved by God is far more desirable to Him than a large, expensive sacrifice from a wicked person [רש״י]. Furthermore, the righteous may receive only a meager portion in this world, but it is given out of God's profound love for them. In contrast, the wicked might enjoy immense material abundance, but this wealth stems from God's rejection of them. Just as an owner force-feeds an animal not out of genuine care, but merely to slaughter and destroy it at the end of the process, the material success of the wicked is ultimately their undoing [אלשיך].
