A person's ability to grow often depends on their willingness to accept criticism. A cynical individual creates a psychological and spiritual barrier that prevents self-improvement simply out of a reluctance to face correction. The cynic is characterized as frivolous and arrogant [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Such a person mocks the laws of wisdom and morality [מלבי״ם] and actively avoids pursuits that lead to personal perfection [עמנואל הרומי].

The primary approach among commentators is that this dynamic operates on a clear sequence of cause and effect. Because the cynic dislikes being corrected and fears hearing unpleasant truths, he deliberately stays away from the homes of wise people to avoid their criticism [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This avoidance is also driven by a deep sense of shame, as he does not want others pointing out his bad behavior [אמרי דעת]. By rejecting correction, the cynic ultimately severs his connection to wisdom altogether, guaranteeing he will never take the initiative to learn from those who are wise [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי].

The idea that the cynic merely lacks a love for criticism, rather than outright hating it, reveals deeper psychological layers. One perspective notes that this lack of love is not the same as absolute hatred. If the cynic were to actually visit the wise, he might listen to their words and repent. However, his active choice to keep his distance, specifically to avoid being scolded for wasting his time instead of studying the Torah, is exactly what completely blocks his path to repentance [אלשיך].

Another view draws a line between personal criticism and intellectual debate. In this light, the correction refers to logical, rational arguments about wisdom. While the cynic cannot mock solid logical proofs and is forced to surrender to them, he still dislikes the uncomfortable experience of being intellectually defeated. As a result, he chooses to keep himself far away from the company of wise people [מלבי״ם].
