Proverbs 15:29Sefaria

רָח֣וֹק יְ֭הֹוָה מֵרְשָׁעִ֑ים וּתְפִלַּ֖ת צַדִּיקִ֣ים יִשְׁמָֽע׃

The relationship between humanity and God operates on a profound principle of reciprocity. Rather than arbitrary shifts in divine favor, the presence or absence of God in a person's life is a direct reflection of their own moral choices and actions.

The primary approach among commentators is that God does not actively pull away from people. Instead, those who act wickedly create the distance themselves through their harmful behavior [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי]. As individuals pull further away from goodness, divine providence naturally recedes from their lives, even though God's core essence remains entirely unchanged. This distance manifests as an unwillingness from God to offer help or listen to their calls [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. As a result, God remains far removed from accepting the prayers of those who choose a path of wrongdoing [עמנואל הרומי].

Conversely, those who practice justice, both internally and in their dealings with others, earn a deep and meaningful closeness to God. Because of this intimate bond, God listens to their prayers and grants their requests, even when they are spoken softly and without shouting [עמנואל הרומי]. The very fact that their prayers are answered serves as a clear sign that their words are welcomed and desired [רלב״ג], reflecting the broader truth that God remains near to all who call out to Him with genuine sincerity [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The prayers of the righteous also carry a weight that extends far beyond their personal lives, holding significant moral and communal value. Often, they pray on behalf of the wider public. By doing so, they provide a layer of protection even for wrongdoers, keeping them from giving up on the possibility of repentance by recognizing that God still wishes for their rehabilitation [אלשיך].

Furthermore, in times of conflict when wicked individuals return evil for good and spread hostility, prayer becomes a vital shield for the righteous person. They can turn to God and ask Him to fight their battles on their behalf. God hears these pleas without holding the righteous at fault, a dynamic clearly visible in the life of King David [אלשיך]. Ultimately, the shifting dynamics of closeness and distance, along with whether a prayer is embraced or turned away, reveal a natural system of spiritual consequence. A person experiences divine care and reward in direct proportion to their spiritual efforts and the quality of their character [אמרי דעת].
