Proverbs 29:21Sefaria

Education and the setting of boundaries are critical foundations that must be established early in life, whether dealing with subordinates or managing personal habits. When discipline is replaced by excessive softness and indulgence from the start, it often leads to a complete reversal of roles later on, where the one meant to serve ultimately becomes the master.

On a practical level, this concept serves as a warning against being overly lenient with young workers. A master who provides a young servant with a life of comfort and luxury [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי] without teaching them the value of hard work will eventually face harsh consequences. As the master grows older and requires assistance, the servant will refuse to help. Instead of showing gratitude, the pampered servant will grow arrogant, attempt to take over the household, and might even force the aging master to provide for him Commentators offer different perspectives on exactly how this destructive dynamic unfolds. The primary approach suggests the servant will eventually act as a ruler and seize authority Others propose that the servant will overstep by demanding the elevated status of a family member Another perspective views the inevitable outcome simply as a source of ongoing grief, sorrow, and ruin for the household

Beyond the physical household, many commentators agree that this dynamic represents a profound internal struggle within every person. In this allegory, the master represents the human intellect and the soul, while the servant symbolizes the physical body and base desires The warning is directed at anyone who chooses to indulge their physical desires during their youth rather than training themselves to work hard in the study of Torah and the performance of Commandments. This indulgence leads to a dangerous internal reversal. Ideally, the physical body should act as a helpful tool for the mind and soul in the service of God. However, if the body is pampered, base desires will seize control and crown themselves as rulers over the intellect. Ultimately, this forces a person to spend their life chasing empty physical pleasures rather than achieving their true spiritual purpose.
