Proverbs 29:26Sefaria

Human nature naturally gravitates toward those in power. When facing uncertainty, people often turn to political leaders or figures of authority to secure their future or alter their destiny. Yet, reality reveals that true authority lies elsewhere. The central course of human life is not decided in the halls of government, but is guided entirely by Divine providence.

The primary approach among commentators is that people tend to flatter flesh-and-blood leaders under the illusion that these individuals hold real power. Many seek out a ruler hoping for a fair trial, or they plead for mercy when their lives are in danger Others suggest that approaching a leader is not about legal situations at all. Instead, people look for gifts, assistance, or appointments to positions of leadership

Despite these different motivations, there is a shared understanding that a human ruler is nothing more than an instrument in God's hand. It is God who sways the leader's heart to act favorably or harshly, responding directly to a person's actions and the ultimate Divine decree Therefore, pouring effort into winning over a human leader while neglecting the Creator is considered foolish. A person's prayers should be directed toward the One who actually guides the leader, because even the most minor earthly appointments are decided in heaven

Every final outcome, whether it is simply the proper and right thing that needs to occur [מצודת ציון] or a formal legal verdict of innocence or guilt [רש״י], highlights God's exact, personal providence over each individual. If God watches over the individual so closely, He certainly manages the fate of larger groups and multitudes

A unique perspective suggests that the ruling power people seek is not a human leader at all, but rather the astrological system or a dominant star. According to this view, people try to align their lives with celestial bodies. However, the truth is that God stands far above these natural systems. His will alone dictates human destiny, often overriding the laws of nature and the influence of luck [עמנואל הרומי]. Ultimately, this idea serves as a reminder that all of reality operates exclusively according to God's will and wisdom. Without His help, all human effort and toil are simply in vain [אמרי דעת].
