Human society is deeply shaped by the character of the individuals living within it. A sharp contrast exists between the destructive influence of cynical instigators and the healing, protective presence of the wise. While one group has the power to tear apart an entire community, the other works to calm storms and repair the damage, both socially and spiritually.

The first group consists of mockers and instigators who actively harm their city [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. Commentators offer three distinct ways to understand how these individuals spread destruction. One approach compares their actions to blowing on hot coals. By spreading lies and gossip, they fan the flames of conflict and ignite the community with fierce disputes [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that their behavior brings deep sadness, despair, and a spirit of ruin to the residents [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי]. A third view notes that through their cynical gatherings and harmful speech, these mockers lay down social and spiritual traps. These snares not only capture the city's inhabitants but also trigger divine justice to set traps for them from heaven [אבן עזרא, אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

In stark contrast, wise individuals step in to turn away anger and heal the community, functioning on both a social and a spiritual level. Socially, the primary approach among commentators is that the wise act as peacemakers. When fights break out and rage floods the city because of the instigators, the wise use their understanding to mediate between rivals and calm the hostility between neighbors [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי].

On a spiritual level, the anger that the wise must turn away is the wrath of God. While the mockers awaken divine judgment against the city, the wise use their understanding to escape these traps [אבן עזרא]. They actively inspire the people to repent and pray on their behalf to remove God's anger [מלבי״ם]. Their profound righteousness is revealed in their prayers. They do not ask God to punish the instigators alone for the damage they caused. Instead, they plead with Him to turn His anger away from the entire city, ultimately protecting even the wicked [אלשיך].
