Proverbs 30:21Sefaria

There are times when the natural order of the world turns upside down, and the proper hierarchy of life is shattered. When this happens, the very foundations of existence seem to shake. The inhabitants of the earth watch in shock and anxiety as bizarre and improper events unfold. Three strange phenomena create a deep sense of unease, but when a fourth occurs, the distress multiplies until the burden becomes entirely unbearable On a societal level, this reflects a reality where individuals with terrible character traits rise to positions of power and greatness. Their sudden ascent leads to corrupt and damaging leadership. The fourth and most severe situation represents a complete breaking of all social norms, where an inferior and unworthy element takes total control over someone far more deserving

Beyond the social dynamic, this upheaval holds a historical meaning regarding the suffering of the Israelites. The first three tremors symbolize the first three historical exiles. The unbearable fourth event points to the fourth and final exile, which is longer and more bitter than the rest. Yet, this perspective also offers a message of comfort. Just as the world shook until the previous oppressive empires were punished, the crushing weight of this final exile will eventually end with its complete downfall [אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators takes these concepts into the realm of the human soul, viewing them as an allegory for our internal struggles. Life is a constant battle between the rational mind and physical desires. According to the proper order established by God, our physical drives and imagination are meant to serve the intellect, helping us achieve wisdom and truth However, when there is a role reversal and the animalistic urges take control instead of the mind, the human body loses its balance and begins to function in a distorted way. Instead of being satisfied with what is necessary and focusing on truth and building the world, a person enslaves their intellect to chase after physical luxuries and false illusions This internal crisis reaches its peak with the unbearable fourth stage. At this point, the animalistic soul completely drives out the rational mind, and false ideas destroy all sense of truth. In this critical state, the unity of the intellect is ruined, and the individual loses both their proper state of existence and their connection to God's influence
