תהלים, פרק קל״ו, פסוק כ״ה

Psalms 136:25Sefaria

נֹתֵ֣ן לֶ֭חֶם לְכׇל־בָּשָׂ֑ר כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃

After recounting a chain of historical miracles and acts of kindness performed for the Israelites, the psalm reaches a sweeping climax. It shifts from specific national events to recognize a universal and constant kindness. The primary approach among commentators is that this highlights God's ongoing providence over every creature on earth. God prepares and delivers the exact, suitable nourishment for every single being, thereby sustaining all existence [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי].

This act of providing daily sustenance is regarded as God's most permanent and continuous action [ביאור שטיינזלץ], freely given to all creations [רש״י]. The significance of this daily provision is so profound that Talmudic scholars viewed it as one of the ultimate high points of the entire Great Hallel prayer, matching the importance of the famous declaration that God opens His hand to satisfy the desire of every living thing [תורה תמימה].

From a perspective of faith, it is easy to mistakenly believe that food and livelihood rely entirely on the systems of nature, the weather, or mere chance. However, the reality is that God actively directs these natural systems. Every ounce of goodness and nourishment originates from Him in a state of constant kindness, making Him the true and direct source of all abundance in the world [מלבי״ם].

In contrast to this universal perspective, another approach views this provision not as a global, daily occurrence, but as a direct continuation of the historical timeline of the Israelites. According to this view, the focus is on a specific miracle that took place during the leadership of Joshua. When the Israelites first entered the land, they were forbidden from eating its local produce until the special Omer sacrifice was brought. During that waiting period, God miraculously supplied them with bread until the day after Passover, extending His specific, historical care for the nation [אלשיך].
